The Joseph Francomano Scholarship
This scholarship is named after Joseph J. Francomano, who served Junior Achievement for more than fifty years, including 44 years as Executive Vice President. During his tenure, Mr. Francomano was instrumental in ensuring the transition of Junior Achievement from after-school programs to in-school programs. The scholarship awarded in his name provides $5,000 annually for up to four academic years. The Foundation had four students receiving scholarships during the 2004-2005 year.
Andrea Hibbeler is a recent high school graduate from St. Louis, Missouri. Andrea was president of her JA Company Program, Up and Coming. She participated in Girl Scouts, concert choir, was a newsletter editor, and taught piano. Andrea also founded her own company, Sugar & Spice Bakery. She plans to combine her talents in business and music to major in business administration and piano performance to fulfill her dream of opening her very own music studio. She will attend St. Louis University in the fall.
Josh Wei is attending Georgetown University. In high school, he started his own import/export business for French tapestries. He founded the school's Junior Achievement Club. He was one of six national finalists for the Young Entrepreneur's Award given by the Young Entrepreneurs Organization.
Wismine Joseph graduated in the top ten percent of her class at Westhill High School in Stamford, Connecticut. Born in Haiti, Wismine overcame the challenge of learning another language and helped her mother take care of her two sisters. She is a graduate of the JA Company program and is a student at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut.
Nader Bayat is a graduate of Northbrook High School in Houston, Texas where he was class valedictorian and earned a 4.0 GPA while supporting his mother. Nader's achievements are special for many reasons, not the least of which is that he did not speak English when he moved to the United States in 1993. Our 2001 Joseph Francomano Scholarship recipient is now a senior, studying chemistry at the University of California at Berkeley.
Hugh B. Sweeny, Jr. Student Achievement Award
This award is named after Hugh B. “Jim” Sweeny, Jr. who served Junior Achievement for more than 32 years, including many years as National Program Director. During his tenure, Mr. Sweeny managed and expanded the National Junior Achievers Conference from 60 participants in 1948 to more than 3,000 delegates in 1977.
Toni Kraeva, a senior at Granville High School in Granville, Ohio, was awarded the Hugh B. Sweeny, Jr. Student Achievement Award this year. Toni graduated at the top of her class in academics and was also involved in tennis, Key Club, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, SWAT, and is the founder of the Mu Alpha Theta club at Granville High School. She plans to major in economics and business Williams College starting this fall.
